Mindful Eating May Help People Lose Weight

People who are constantly struggling to lose weight, should consider implementing mindful eating to their daily routine. Several weight loss centers are set to implement mindful eating techniques to assist their patients in their weight loss journey. The study was lead by Dr. Carolyn Dunn, who is a professor and a nutrition specialist at the North Carolina State University in Raleigh.


Prof. Dunn and her colleagues set up a program called Eat Smart, Move More, Weigh Less (ESMMWL) which tracked the activities of the participants. This program was developed by the NC State University and Public Division Of Health. Obesity is one of the major health problems around the world with twice as many people suffering from it compared to the people who were obese in 1980.

According to a survey estimate in 2014, over 1.9 billion people in the world were either overweight or obese. Out of these, over 600 million people fell under the obese category. In fact, it is assumed that most people now live in the regions where obesity kills more people than being underweight.

Obesity is considered a major public health issue not only because of the poor state of health it puts you in, but also due to the risk it exposes you to in the form of diseases like chronic mental illness, type 2 diabetes, stroke or in extreme cases some form of cancer. Although it is preventable, it arises due to varying factors like behavior, genetic indulgence, and environment. Hence, every solution offered should be tweaked according to an individual's perspective. An important feature of mindfulness is that there is no right or wrong in the picture. People are only aware about their surroundings and there is no judgment.

The study combined this mindfulness technique with eating to help people focus on the more subtle facets of eating. They were asked to focus on the taste, noticing hunger and fullness cues, planning meal time and snacks etc. The study found that people who were asked to focus on the details, ended up losing more weight than those who weren't.
